How to Measure Acoustic Slat Wall Gaps Before Choosing Accessories

How to Measure Acoustic Slat Wall Gaps Before Choosing Accessories

Acoustic slat wall panels can look similar while using different slat profiles, spacing and manufacturing tolerances. Before choosing hooks, shelves or storage accessories, take a few minutes to measure the actual clear gap on your wall. A correct measurement helps you select the right option and prevents unnecessary pressure on the wood slats or acoustic felt.

What does the 12–20 mm specification mean?

For SLAT ADDONS accessories, the size specification refers to the clear gap between two adjacent wood slats. It does not refer to the width of a wood slat, the thickness of a slat or the total thickness of the acoustic panel.

Our current accessory range supports clear gap widths from 12 mm through 20 mm, including both 12 mm and 20 mm. Because panel profiles can vary between manufacturers—and sometimes between different points on the same wall—you should always measure your own installation before ordering.

What you need

  • A metric ruler with clear millimetre markings, or preferably a digital or manual caliper
  • A pencil and note paper, or your phone for recording measurements
  • Good lighting so you can clearly see the sides of each wood slat

A caliper normally gives the most precise result, but a rigid metric ruler is suitable when used carefully.

How to measure the clear gap

  1. Choose an undamaged area. Avoid outer panel edges, joints, cut edges or any section where the slats or felt are visibly deformed.
  2. Measure from slat side to slat side. Place the ruler or caliper inside the opening and measure only the empty space between the two adjacent wood slats.
  3. Do not include the wood. The measurement must not include the width or thickness of either slat.
  4. Measure in several places. Check the top, middle and bottom of the intended installation area. Small variations can occur.
  5. Record the narrowest consistent measurement. Use this value when selecting the product option.

Panel width and height are planning measurements

Full panel dimensions help you plan where an accessory will sit, but they do not determine compatibility. Common European market examples include panels around 2400 × 600 mm, formats such as 2440 × 610 mm or 2440 × 300 mm, and some custom heights up to approximately 2780 mm.

These dimensions are market examples only, not a universal standard. Always check the exact width, height and construction information supplied by your panel manufacturer. An accessory should still be selected according to the measured clear gap between adjacent slats.

How to choose the accessory size

If your narrowest consistent measurement is an exact available size—for example, 14 mm—select the matching 14 mm option. If the measurement falls between two sizes, changes noticeably across the installation area or is outside the 12–20 mm range, contact us before ordering.

A photo taken from the side of the panel, together with measurements from several points, can help us understand the panel profile. You can send these details through our Contact page.

Installation checklist

  • Confirm that the acoustic panel is securely installed.
  • Check that the wall or substrate is suitable for the intended load.
  • Avoid panel edges, joints, cut sections and visibly damaged areas.
  • Insert the accessory gently—never force an oversized part into the gap.
  • Stop immediately if the wood slats or acoustic felt begin to deform.
  • Follow the installation and load guidance provided for the specific product.

Products marked No-Drill do not require permanent drilling, but correct sizing and careful installation are still essential.

Common measurement mistakes

Measuring the slat thickness

The 12–20 mm specification is not the thickness of the wood slat. Measure the clear opening beside the slat.

Measuring only one point

Spacing can vary slightly, particularly near a cut or panel joint. Measure several points and use the narrowest consistent result.

Choosing by panel brand or overall size

Panels from the same brand or with similar overall dimensions can use different profiles. The actual gap measurement is more reliable than the panel name or overall dimensions.

Forcing an accessory into place

If installation requires excessive pressure, stop and recheck the measurement. Forcing a part can damage the finish, slats or felt.

Frequently asked questions

Does the supported range include both 12 mm and 20 mm?

Yes. Both endpoints are included in the supported 12–20 mm clear-gap range.

Will the accessories fit every acoustic slat wall?

No accessory can be assumed to fit every panel automatically. Panel profiles and tolerances vary, so measurement is required before ordering.

What if my gap measurement changes from top to bottom?

Use the narrowest consistent measurement and contact us before ordering if the variation is significant.

Do panel width and height affect fit?

They help with placement and layout planning, but compatibility is determined by the clear gap between adjacent slats.
